Course Overview

This nationally recognised course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to respond to first aid emergencies involving infants, children, and adults in both education and care environments and general workplace settings.

It covers recognising and responding to illness and injury, performing CPR, managing asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies, and applying first aid treatments for a range of conditions through practical scenarios and hands-on activities aligned with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

Course Details

Participants in this course will learn how to effectively

  • Recognise and assess emergency situations involving infants and children
  • Apply infection control and casualty safety principles
  • Access and communicate with emergency services
  • Perform CPR on adults, children and infants
  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Manage asthma emergencies using bronchodilators and spacers
  • Administer adrenaline auto-injectors for anaphylaxis emergencies
  • Assist with choking emergencies in infants and children
  • Manage severe and non-life-threatening bleeding
  • Recognise and manage shock
  • Apply immobilisation techniques for fractures, sprains and dislocations
  • Apply pressure immobilisation techniques for envenomation
  • Provide first aid for burns, minor wounds and other injuries
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of common childhood illnesses and medical conditions
  • Understand basic anatomy and physiological differences between adults, children and infants
  • Provide age-appropriate reassurance and communication to children during emergencies
  • Accurately communicate incident details to parents, caregivers and emergency services
  • Complete incident documentation in line with workplace procedures
  • Recognise psychological impacts following incidents
  • Review incidents to improve emergency response and outcomes

On successful completion of this course, participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment, recognising their skills and competency in providing first aid and CPR in an education and care setting.

This course awards the following nationally accredited units:

  • HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
  • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Entry Requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and rescue breathing techniques on manikins.

  • Online pre-course study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online/pre-course studies.
