Course Overview

This nationally recognised course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in emergency situations.

The training focuses on recognising cardiac arrest, responding quickly and safely, and delivering high-quality CPR in line with current Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, using practical, hands-on activities to build confidence and competence in real-world scenarios.

Course Details

Participants in this course will learn how to effectively:

  • Recognise and assess cardiac arrest
  • Make quick decisions in a cardiac emergency
  • Call for and coordinate emergency medical assistance
  • Perform high-quality CPR on an unconscious casualty
  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Minimise interruptions to chest compressions
  • Rotate rescuers safely during prolonged CPR
  • Manage airway complications, including regurgitation or vomiting
  • Follow Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines
  • Provide an effective handover to emergency services
  • Convey accurate verbal incident details
  • Review incidents to improve response and performance
  • Recognise psychological impacts on rescuers
  • Seek support following critical incidents

On successful completion of this course, participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment, recognising their skills and competency in providing CPR.

This course awards the following nationally accredited unit:

  • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Entry Requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and rescue breathing techniques on manikins.

  • Online pre-course study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online/pre-course studies.
